Why Most Rental Companies Don't Allow Rideshare
Traditional rental companies prohibit rideshare and delivery work because their standard insurance doesn't cover commercial use. If you use a Budget rental for Uber and have an accident, your insurance is void and you're personally liable.
The Insurance Issue
Standard rental insurance covers personal use only. Rideshare and delivery work is classified as commercial driving and requires specific coverage. Using a personal rental for commercial work violates the rental agreement.
What You Need for Uber in Australia
To drive for Uber in Australia, you need: a valid driver's licence (held for at least 1 year), a car that meets Uber's vehicle requirements (less than 10 years old for UberX), and appropriate insurance that covers rideshare driving.
Uber Vehicle Requirements
UberX requires a 4-door car, less than 10 years old, with 5 seatbelts, air conditioning, and no commercial branding. The car must pass an annual vehicle inspection.
Licence Requirements
You need a full licence (not provisional/learner) held for at least 1 year. International licences are accepted if valid in Queensland. You may need to complete a driver accreditation process.
Delivery Work (Uber Eats, DoorDash, etc.)
Food and package delivery has different requirements than passenger rideshare. Vehicle requirements are less strict, but you still need appropriate insurance. Many delivery platforms accept older vehicles and even motorcycles/scooters.
Calculating If Rental Makes Sense
At $160/week rental, you need to earn more than that to make a profit. Most active Uber drivers in Brisbane earn $20-30/hour before expenses. Driving 10-15 hours per week can cover your rental cost, with anything above that as income.
Queensland Rideshare Regulations
Queensland requires rideshare drivers to hold a Driver Authorisation (DA) from the Department of Transport. This involves a background check and costs around $100. The process takes 2-4 weeks. Your vehicle must also be registered in Queensland and have a current Certificate of Inspection. Uber provides guidance on meeting Queensland requirements during their onboarding process.
Common Mistakes Rideshare Drivers Make
- ✗Using a standard rental car for Uber without permission — your insurance won't cover you
- ✗Not getting a Driver Authorisation in Queensland before starting
- ✗Underestimating fuel costs — track your kilometres carefully
- ✗Working during slow hours when demand (and pay) is low
- ✗Not tracking expenses for tax purposes — you can claim deductions
- ✗Renting a car that doesn't meet Uber's vehicle requirements
